2010/08/03: C2 Microsystems joins WebM initiative, announces support for VP8 video codec
Beijing, China and San Jose, California, August 3, 2010 – C2 Microsystems, a leading developer of media processor semiconductor devices and software for internet-connected television and set-top box products, today announced that it has joined the WebM project, an open web media project launched by Google. As part of its support for WebM, C2 will port the VP8 video codec to its media processor, making content delivered in the WebM format available on consumer electronics devices in the shortest time.
Conventionally, the semiconductor devices at the core of televisions and set-top boxes have been designed for the reception of video content delivered over broadcast networks using a limited set of technologies. Internet-delivered video and rich media content has proliferated and the consumer’s preference to see it on the television screen has grown, driving the need for more flexible and more powerful media processing solutions. C2’s media processor architecture was specifically developed for the processing of rich media content based on emerging internet technologies within consumer electronics products.
“C2 is a pioneer in the delivery of internet video to consumer electronics devices,” said Dr Gene (Jinxiang) Liu, CEO of C2 Microsystems. “C2 believes that the WebM project is an important contribution to the mission to deliver internet content to consumers wherever they want to watch it.”
C2’s Media Framework currently provides support for the Matroska container format and the Vorbis audio codec, two key components of the WebM specification. Support for the VP8 video codec will be available on the CC1202 and CC1203 devices in Q4 2010. C2 also partners with leading web technology companies to provide embedded web browser functions to consumer electronics devices.
